Overview of Psychotherapy

Arnab Datta, MD is a psychiatrist who practices medication management along with a variety of talk therapies. Dr. Datta believes that it’s important to understand one’s emotional journey before prescribing medication. He believes that many people can be treated without medications. Dr. Datta has plenty of patients who see him for psychotherapy alone. He also provides life coaching and family and couples therapy.

Dr. Datta practices the following types of therapy:

Psychodynamic psychotherapy
Cognitive behavioral therapy
Dialectical behavioral therapy
Family & couples therapy
Motivational interviewing
Life coaching

These psychotherapy techniques are applied to treat mood disorders ,bipolar disorders , anxiety disorders, trauma and loss among other conditions (See What’s Treated). He also uses holistic methods, like personalized guided meditations, visualization exercises and EMDR to help you learn from the past and feel better.

TYPES OF PSYCHOTHERAPY

  • Motivational Interviewing Therapy:  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK64964/. A type of talk therapy used in substance abuse and addictions. This can be applied to both behavioral and drug addiction. Motivational interviewing can help change negative, maladaptive and self-sabotaging behavior patterns while keeping you focused on accomplishing your goals.
  • PsychodynamicPsychotherapy:   http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S2237-60892019000100006&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en.             A type of therapy which explores the unconscious mind. Our current day to day lives are effected by things that have happened in our past which fester in our unconscious mind. This is our blind spot i.e. what we don’t know about ourselves. Dr. Datta can help you understand the positive and negative elements in the unconscious mind, so you can be happier.

In treatment with Dr. Datta, you can do Dream Analysis as well, which is also a type of exploration of the unconscious mind. Dreams are the unconscious mind coming to the surface. Dr. Datta can help you decipher these images and convey what it means for you.

Psychodynamic psychotherapy also helps process Trauma. If you’ve tried psychedelics like mushrooms or ayahuasca, you can share your experiences with Dr. Datta and he can help you make sense out of it. Psychedelics open up your consciousness and show you new possibilities in life. This is called Psychedelic Psychotherapy, and it can be helpful for conditions like treatment-resistant depression or anxiety. Dr. Datta doesn’t prescribe these substances but  rather he just does psychodynamic psychotherapy to help find the significance and meaning of these ‘trips’ or experiences.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/ PMC3673298/. CBT is a goal oriented psychotherapy which helps you accomplish your goals. In CBT, we uncover core and intermediate beliefs which might be holding you back or sabotaging your results. Then we take a step by step strategic approach to solve the problem. Dr. Datta does exploration of the unconscious mind when doing CBT as well, but this is very practical psychotherapy with practical real world advice. Dr. Datta tries to help you accomplish this in the least possible sessions. People come to see Dr. Datta for CBT and other psychotherapeutic treatment after they have completed Self Improvement Expos and Seminars. They come to see Dr. Datta when they want to be more serious about their individual growth.

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): DBT is used to treat individuals with traits like narcissismborderline, or histrionic personality disordersto name a few. Dr. Datta helps his patients dissect their feelings to realize how they are becoming triggered and what brings on their impulsivity. Dr. Datta derives lessons from the work of Marsha Linehan and Nancy McWilliams. People who develop a personality disorder have difficulty maintaining a relationship or even a job. They lacked the nourishment, love and guidance growing up which allowed their emotions to develop awry. Some say that Personality Disorder can’t be cured, that it’s permanent. Rather, Dr. Datta believes in neuroplasticity, that the brain and mind is always changing. With the right confidant, the right therapist and doctor, individuals can develop the insight to overcome these traumas and slights that precipitated in them developing a personality disorder. This reframing of the mind takes consistency, dedication and time, but Dr. Datta believes it to be possible.
  • Family Therapy (Relationships):  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/ PMC7001353/–   We are part and parcel of our family and our ancestors. We inherit qualities from them, but we also need to become our own person in a healthy way, as explained by psychologist Margaret Mahler’s Separation and Individuation theory. Dr. Datta uses techniques from the Ackerman and Gottman Institutes in his family and couples therapy. When family members don’t feel understood, in the least number of sessions, Dr. Datta helps the loved ones align in their varying communication styles. Dr. Datta teaches the Speaker Listener Technique (among other techniques) to help each family member understand each other and align. These family and couple therapy skills are useful in teaching groups, teams, and co-workers to work well together. Dr. Datta even does team-building activities with sports teams and companies. Understanding both your family and your partner’s family is essential in couples therapy as well.

  • Couples Therapy:   https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK253321 /  – Every person expresses love and wants to receive love in a different way. However, these differences in understanding each other can exist regardless of whether partners are new or have been together for decades. Dr. Datta helps couples understand and communicate with each other better. Couples feel better when they become friends and confidants again. People have different ways of communicating and showing love, and it takes time and patience to learn and adapt to each other. Dr. Datta also helps interracial and interfaith couples find a common ground in their beliefs. You don’t need to be of a different race or religion to see Dr. Datta. Please have a discovery call with Dr. Datta to see if he can understand your needs.

Also, If your previous relationship has ended or if you’re not yet in a relationship but want to be, Dr. Datta can help. Dr. Datta has helped many people discover self love, become more secure in themselves and know their priorities in life. This way they can start being in healthier relationships as well.

  • Life Coaching and Counseling: What makes a Psychiatrist unique at providing life coaching and counseling? A psychiatrist can see what’s happening in your conscious and unconscious mind, but that’s not all. If the psychiatrist/therapist is good, they can also help you accomplish your goals in real time and not just over-analyze. Many people prefer seeing a Life Coach or a Counselor because they are afraid to see a “Shrink” for some reason. Some people might think, “Nope, that’s for crazy people.” Let’s dispel that myth. Dr. Datta is a psychiatrist who can see what’s happening in your blind spot, yet he is very practical in his strategic goal oriented advice. People see him to provide this objective bias free feedback in the fewest sessions possible
