Whether you’re new to Psychiatry and Psychotherapy or you’re seeking to find what’s really going on psychologically and emotionally after seeing other providers before, Dr. Datta is the psychiatrist people see when they are seeking a provider to make sense of the feedback they’ve already received and are now looking to “pull it all together” and are seeking this change swiftly. He sees your unconscious mind and is the objective confidant in your corner who sees the world from your perspective. Dr. Datta is a psychopharmacologist who understands personality, emotions, and life story and correlates your medications to your unique personality. Dr. Datta’s treatment is integrative and holistic.
Dr. Datta can be your therapist if you’re only seeking psychotherapy. He provides 6 different types of psychotherapy. For example: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Psychodynamic Psychotherapy, and Couples therapy (to name a few—see the Psychotherapy page for more). He’s been helping couples from different races and faiths find common ground. He works with people from the Lgbtq+ community as well, as he’s the medical director of an Lgbtq+ clinic. In individual psychotherapy, he can help you find your identity in your life stage.
Dr. Datta can help you with drug addiction and behavioral addiction. The psychotherapy of addiction helps people learn from their traumas and negative experiences and let go of bad habits. Also, one doesn’t need to be addicted to something to see Dr. Datta; let’s do away with this stigma.
Dr. Datta completed 2 fellowships in addiction psychiatry, making him a controlled substance specialist. Since there is inappropriate prescribing of controlled substance medications happening in society, Dr. Datta tapers down egregious doses of Xanax and Adderall IR to more appropriate doses. You can become dependent on these medications, so it needs to be at the right dose—and tapered down to the right dose in the right cadence. It’s important to have the right psychological understanding of one’s trauma and difficulties in tandem with having meds that help—to find the right balance. Dr. Datta also provides Suboxone for opiate use disorder (see Addiction Services for more).
Patients, couples, and families can have Dr. Datta as a provider, objective confidant, and advisor in their corner. A provider needs to be an empathic listener and have a vision for the blind spots and unconscious minds of the patients and clients. Schedule a free Discovery call to see if you are a fit.

Medication Management: If you are on superfluous medications that are not congruent to your personality, if you are experiencing side effects from your medication and feel that something is wrong, Arnab Datta, MD, the psychiatrist, is here to help. Whether you’ve been to numerous prestigious psychiatric hospitals and clinics and still feel that something is missing, Arnab Datta, MD, is the private psychiatrist you can sign on to your case to have an expert second opinion as well as regular longitudinal sessions as the confidant and objective advisor in your corner.
Dr. Datta is similar to having your own personal private detective who can decipher what your diagnosis is and the most efficient medication regimen that can assist you in remedying your psychological and emotional struggles. Dr. Datta is a psychiatrist who also understands your conscious and unconscious mind; he understands your blind spots, family history, your emotions, your personality, and your character and integrates medication management into it when needed.
There’s no need to have a negative stigma when taking psychiatric medications. Dr. Datta prescribes meds to those who need it, he doesn’t just prescribe it superfluously. Imagine patients who are dedicated to their psychotherapy, meditation, and holistic practice for 10 years. They might still hit a ceiling in their progress. When these patients are given medication (at a specific dose and duration) for their depression, anxiety, or mood disorder, they’re able to break through this ceiling of progress rather efficiently. Psychiatric medication can be a helpful tool that can help you break through this ceiling, and then the dose can be tapered down skillfully.
Arnab Datta, MD, is board-certified in adult psychiatry and addiction psychiatry and is licensed to practice medicine in New York, Chicago, North Carolina, Florida, New Jersey, and Illinois. Dr. Datta completed two fellowships in addiction psychiatry, which allowed him to become a controlled substance specialist. Dr. Datta prescribes controlled substance medication properly so that the patient does not become dependent on it. Rather, he utilizes medication as a tool to help you become psychologically and emotionally stronger and possibly not need the medication anymore. At the same time, those who need the medication continue on it. It’s not one size fits all. Dr. Datta integrates a variety of psychotherapies into your treatment as well. If you’re looking for the best psychiatric and psychological treatment, this is the personalization and customization for you
Psychotherapy: You’re probably used to seeing a social worker, a PhD, or a PhD or PsyD psychologist for psychotherapy. Arnab Datta, MD, is a psychiatrist who provides a variety of psychotherapies. Dr. Datta is a psychiatrist (a psychopharmacologist), and a controlled substance specialist; however, he has the psychological skills and can understand your conscious and unconscious mind. Here, you don’t have to see a separate psychiatrist for medication and a separate psychologist for talk therapy/psychotherapy. This is like having two doctors in one.
Dr. Datta’s passion is to understand your life story, your emotions, your personality, and your character and to provide you with the following psychotherapy modalities. He also prescribes medication for you in a nuanced way that is congruent to your specific emotions and personality. Also, to improve your psychotherapy experience, customized meditations are tailor-made for you based on your personal life and struggles. Dr. Datta has a long history of meditation; thus, he integrates customized, personalized meditations to help you reframe your negative experiences and habits and surrender these negativities — so you can be the best version of yourself.
Rest assured, if you’re only interested in psychotherapy, Dr. Datta has plenty of patients who see him for psychotherapy alone. Also, if you’re happy with your outside psychotherapist, Dr. Datta collaborates with numerous psychologists and remembers not to overstep the boundaries of the psychotherapy your current therapist is providing. Dr. Datta will simply support you with medication management in these cases.
Dr. Datta practices the following types of psychotherapy: psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, family and couple therapy, motivational interviewing, and life coaching. These psychotherapy techniques are applied to treat mood disorders, bipolar disorders, anxiety disorders, trauma, and loss, among other conditions (see What’s Treated). Dr. Datta also uses holistic methods, like personalized guided meditations, visualization exercises, and EMDR, to help you let go of the dark or negative memories and internally change for the better.
Addiction Treatment: Dr. Datta can help manage doses of Xanax, Klonopin, Adderall IR, and/or other controlled substance medications. Even though patients were prescribed these medications by a doctor, the dosage may not be right and patients may have become dependent on them. Dr. Datta understands the difference between tapering these down to a healthy dose and continuing certain patients on certain doses of these meds. Dr. Datta takes into account the personality, character, and emotions of the patient and doesn’t reflexively prescribe medication session after session. The medication is used as a tool to improve the psychological and emotional strength of the patient. Dr. Datta gets to the bottom of what’s causing this anxiety or lack of focus and treats the issues emotionally as well as with meds.
Patients don’t need to be “addicted to a drug” or “suffer from addiction” to see Dr. Datta. Bad habits are like our “demons.” Dr. Datta can help you remedy these dark parts of your personality through medical management, psychotherapy, meditation, and EMDR. If you’re trying to change a behavior that you’ve had a tough time shaking, Dr. Datta is the behavior change doctor. If you’re having a tough time changing for your partner in a relationship, Dr. Datta is the tough coach you might need to change for the better.
Dr. Datta treats both drug addiction and behavioral addiction. Behavioral addictions that are treated include gambling, internet, and sex addiction. Dr. Datta is someone who can help you overcome your bad habits or self-sabotaging drives because he integrates a variety of psychotherapies, meditation exercises, and EMDR into his treatment. Dr. Datta also prescribes Suboxone for opioid use disorder.
Arnab Datta, MD, completed two fellowships (specializations) in addiction psychiatry, which is why he is a controlled substance specialist.
Meditation/EMDR: Psychotherapy and meditation in combination is the secret to changing behavior and character for the better. Going to a therapist and talking about your issues is half the battle. The other half is going home and practicing what’s taught in the therapy session, along with meditations to let go of the self-sabotaging habits.
Psychotherapy helps reframe issues until it becomes second nature. Over time you internalize the therapist. You ask the question, “Hmm, what would my therapist do in this situation.” This is how new habits are formed. Over time, meditation helps integrate this psychotherapeutic intellectualization into the heart. Both are used together in Dr. Datta’s treatment.
Customized Meditation and EMDR are created for each patient individually. Dr. Datta listens to your trauma, negative experiences, depression, and anxiety and composes a custom meditation for you which you can practice regularly. Meditation and Emdr can help let go of the pain or behavior you want to change. Mental health is optimized when both psychotherapy and meditation are used together.

Mood disorders are not exactly depression or anxiety. That’s why it’s tough for people to decipher this. Some patients are on antidepressant meds and/or anti-anxiety meds and don’t know why they’re having any improvement. Psychotherapy is very important as well; you can’t just take medication and think it’s going to solve all your issues. Skilled psychotherapy is needed where it truly resonates with your life struggles and gives you insight into how you need to evolve for the better. Sometimes a mood-stabilizing medication along with psychotherapy is needed to help you improve.
Dr. Datta treats the following: bipolar disorder, hypomania, cyclical bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, depression of manic depressive illness, substance-induced mood disorders, the constellation of neglect, abandonment, and trauma of childhood and adolescence, borderline personality traits, and addictions.
Why you are depressed is a question that needs to be skillfully listened to, understood, and strategically treated. There is an origin to your depression. Sometimes it’s a depressive personality or familial trait. Sometimes it’s from trauma. Or from grief or bereavement. Depression is like a seed that was planted long ago and grows into something, and you don’t know where it came from or why it keeps plaguing you. Some unconscious exploration is needed to accurately ascertain this. Medications are used as needed. Dr. Datta is a psychopharmacologist who is trained in a variety of psychotherapies. Dr. Datta has many patients who are on psychotherapy only and not on medication. He also has patients who are receiving a combination of both.
Dr. Datta treats the following: major depressive disorder, clinical depression in adults, seasonal affective disorder (SAD), cultural integration and adaptation, grief, loss, and bereavement, manic depressive illness, teen and adolescent depression, and other mood swings and mood disorders.
Bipolarity operates on a spectrum. Some people with hypomania and bipolar II are executives and CEOs (but not all of them) and can operate at a very high level. They need less sleep; they’re very social and talkative, and it works well for them. However, they even need to recharge their batteries properly. Then there are folks who have bipolar type 1, who get hospitalized, and who have difficulty holding on to a relationship or a job. Suicidality may be involved as well. And there are shades of bipolarity in the middle. Dr. Datta is a psychiatrist who treats this spectrum of bipolarities with specificity; he treats it with medication management, psychotherapy, and meditation.
If you say to yourself, “Oh, I can’t meditate,” then it’s even more important for you to become well versed at meditation. You will arrive at your answers in a psychospiritual way as you quiet your mind. You can’t arrive at your solutions running 100 miles an hour. There is a time to run a hundred miles an hour when you’re trying to execute something that requires speed. However, stillness is very important. Stillness is an element that is necessary for people suffering from bipolarity. If you’re interested in this nuanced type of treatment, then Dr. Data is the right psychiatrist for you.
Dr. Datta treats bipolar I and bipolar II. Extreme mood swings from depression to euphoria, Changes in appetite and sleep patterns, Substance-induced mania, Anxiety disorders, PTSD, and social phobias, Delusions or hallucinations. Differentiation between bipolar disorder and ADHD. Differentiation between bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, and schizophrenia.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD):
The way Arnab Datta, MD, diagnoses and treats ADHD is by understanding your genuine strengths and weaknesses first. His clinical interview is very nuanced, where he understands your work and study habits; this plays a major role in your focus and concentration. In Dr. Datta’s practice, the goal is to cure your ADHD instead of just taking higher and higher doses of potent controlled substance medications.
Arnab Datta, MD, completed two fellowships in addiction psychiatry, which makes him a controlled substance specialist. Adderall, Ritalin, and other stimulants happen to be controlled substance medications. Dr. Datta also has a solution for the stimulant shortage in the United States.
There also happens to be an epidemic of people being prescribed too many controlled substance medications, such as Adderall IR 20mg and 30 mg #90/30 days. Dr. Datta is a leader in this industry in understanding the psychological plight of these individuals, and he tapers down their controlled substance medications and stimulants to a sound dose where their focus and concentration are also treated. Even in these cases, we’re working towards finding a cure for their ADHD and their dependence on controlled substance medications.
During the free discovery call, Dr. Datta analyzed the medications the patient is taking, and he told them exactly what he could do for you.
Also, he provides a short computerized exam to examine 10 different cognitive categories; this is in addition to the clinical interview for ADHD. ADHD is properly diagnosed not only with the doctor’s interview but with a computerized exam as well. Please call to learn about the fees.
When treating ADHD, it’s important to understand depression and anxiety as well. You might be in a funk in your life caused by certain life, family, and job stressors. A sophisticated provider will psychologically understand these things about you and not just throw a controlled substance medication at you. It’s very important to understand you psychologically to treat ADHD the right way and find a cure.
Life coaching is also an aspect of treating ADHD. It’s important to understand in which areas you are strong, weak, and mediocre. Perhaps you’re depressed that your heart isn’t in your work or in school. Sometimes family legacy or peer pressure have something to do with it. If we could assess your strengths and weaknesses in an advanced and insightful way, then we could find another path for you. Dr. Datta helps you be honest with yourself to find what path is really right for you.
Dr. Datta treats the following ADHD ailments: inattentive versus behavioral ADHD, or combination, lack of motivation, procrastination, Stimulant treatment, stimulant taper down and reduction to a reasonable dose, Training of the body and mind to remedy ADHD and not be dependent on stimulants.
It’s important to understand why you are trying to achieve looking a certain way, weighing a certain weight, or admiring some body type. It’s a deep psychological and emotional characteristic we need to understand. We need to understand the psychological Why: Why we are binge eating food, avoiding food, or purging food. Sometimes it has to do with pressure from family legacy. Sometimes it’s peer pressure. Sometimes the patient themselves puts pressure on themselves (for various reasons) to look a certain way or weigh a certain weight.
Sometimes, in order to feel better, people eat more; it’s a form of emotional nourishment, a sort of care and warmth you show yourself. Some psychodynamics or unconscious digging is necessary to reveal the inner truths while you’re engaging in this sort of behavior. A goal-oriented cognitive-behavioral therapy is needed to uncover unconscious and conscious limiting beliefs so we can set some goals to achieve a new body habit for the right reasons.
In addition to copious psychological support, Dr. Datta also integrates couples therapy and relationship therapy in order for you to make peace with an eating disorder.
Dr. Datta is a psychopharmacologist who also prescribes medication to make it easier for you to conquer this eating disorder.
Dr. Datta also works with a personal trainer, Dwayne Watt, to help you achieve your goals in fitness and health.
Dr. Datta treats the following conditions regarding eating disorders: Anorexia and malnutrition Bulimia, binge eating disorder, and compulsive overeating Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), orthorexia, body image issues, body dissatisfaction and distorted body image, extreme dieting and obsessive exercise, body dysmorphic disorder, plastic surgery-related, and cosmetic procedure-related issues.
Anxiety emanates from a common core emotion: fear. In order to overcome worry, rumination, separation, anxiety (weather specific or generalized), or fear, Dr. Datta gets to the specific origin of this emotional phenomenon within you.
Even though Dr. Datta is a psychopharmacologist and can treat you with medications, he investigates whether your anxiety is caused by behavioral issues, trauma, neglect, or immigration problems from your past. Dr. Datta provides a variety of psychotherapies in addition to his medication management. Feel free to have a free discovery call to see if Dr. Datta is a fit for you.
Dr. Datta also treats paradoxical reactions from your medication. Some patients are on copious medications throughout the years and have a weird increase in anxiety—when they ought to have a decrease in their anxiety from a supposed anxiety-reducing medication. For example, this happens with xanax (alprazolam).
Fortunately, Dr. Datta is a controlled substance specialist, having completed 2 fellowships in addiction psychiatry. He can reduce a dose of Xanax (6 mg or 8 mg) to something that is much more appropriate for the human body. In this process, he will psychologically help you conquer your anxiety from an emotional and psychological point of view.
Dr. Datta treats the following anxiety disorders: panic attacks, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, benzodiazepine-related anxiety disorders, and drug- and medication-induced intoxication versus withdrawal anxiety disorder.
You don’t need to have any of these ailments to talk to Dr. Datta. There are many people who have never seen a psychiatrist or psychologist who come to see Dr. Datta for expert feedback about why they are feeling sad. Dr. Datta will help you connect the dots.

What are the criteria for being one of the best psychiatrists in the US?
It’s tough to measure, and you shouldn’t see a doctor or anyone who says they are the best. I was told to write about this topic by a marketing team, so I will write about it in the way I (Arnab Datta, MD) believe it should be: to help the patient understand who the doctors are, their skill level, and how to find the right doctor for them. Nowadays, if I don’t hire people to help me market and advertise my practice, then I won’t be successful in my work. I hope you understand. I do the best I can to treat my patients and tell them the truth.
Dr. Datta’s practice was built to give you a better and more accurate read on your conscious vs. unconscious mind within a shorter amount of time. This craft is about listening deeply to life experiences, family history traumas, major life changes, and major stagnancies in life and how to change them for the better. It’s rare for a psychiatrist to also provide a variety of psychotherapies and be an expert on controlled substance medications and addiction treatment. Family and couple therapy is also provided. Even if you’re not coupled, individuals also talk about their relationships.
You don’t need to be mentally ill or an addict to see Dr. Datta. If you have a habit or behavior you want to change, then Dr. Datta is the behavior change doctor for you. Let’s do away with this stigma. Everyone can use an objective listener in their corner who sees your blind spots, hears the word from your eyes and from your walk of life, and gives you feedback that is congruent to you. Not tinged with biases or traumas from the feedback giver’s life. Everyone or their family can use an objective professional confidant in their corner. Doctors who have had their own psychoanalysis for decades can do this. Every word is therapeutic in nature for you. You can have these sessions from the comfort of your own home via video chat.
Dr. Datta is the medical director of 3 institutions; however, this private practice is where you can have a one-on-one relationship with him. Dr. Datta teaches other providers how to prescribe better and how to provide more skilled and accurate psychotherapy. If you’ve been to other psychiatrists or psychologists, you can see how this experience may be deeper and more intimate. This is a small practice, and each patient is treated with time and precision. If you want to level your life up, then this concierge level of service is for you. You can call and talk to a live person at any time: during the weekdays, nights, weekends, and holidays. Please schedule a discovery call.
You will speak with an assistant first. If you’re fit for Dr. Datta, before you formally sign up, he conveys insights to you over the discovery call that you might not receive in therapy for years. These are his observations about you and elements we can work on. So please take that with a grain of salt; it takes a person time to get to know another. Dr. Datta’s forte is reading the conscious vs. unconscious mind. Over these few minutes, he shares what he can see about you, so you can see if you can get any benefit from him. This is because Dr. Datta believes that you should know before you start.
You will receive a call back from a (917) 397-3272 number since this practice was started in New York City; however, Dr. Datta is licensed in Illinois, Florida, New Jersey, and California.

Regarding the follow up sessions; there’s a 45 min long version and a 30 min short version. This is not your 10-15 minutes wellness checks. This is an in depth character and personality analysis. The duration gives you time to talk about what’s happening now as well as issues of the past, so that the doctor can formulate the course of action best suited to you. This allows for a deep conversation where we dive into medication management (when needed), psychotherapy, meditation practices, relationship therapy and addiction treatment (when needed).

How long does it take for any human being to understand another? It can take time sometimes. However, this is dependent on how open the potential patient is to talking about their issues. It’s also dependent on the skill level of the psychiatrist or therapist. This is dependent on how much of an unconscious vision the provider has. The unconscious vision is the ability of a psychiatrist or therapist to see both the conscious and unconscious minds of the patient and to provide feedback in an objective way that is free of bias. Arnab Datta, MD, is a psychiatrist who created this practice to deliver this psychological and emotional synopsis to the patient as soon as possible.
Addiction is defined as one pursuing (or being unable to cut down) harmful behavior and/or substance abuse despite the risks and setbacks it has caused in their life. Addiction may be behavioral or substance abuse-related. It follows the same pathways in the brain; some addictions are more dangerous than others.

Usually, it’s when you need to take medication for your mental health issues. I know this sounds pretty negative, but that’s where the negative stigma of seeing a psychiatrist comes from. Let me share inside information with you about the mental health field. Psychiatrists during our residency are taught a variety of psychotherapies, and we also seek additional education and training to become experts in certain psychotherapies. Psychiatrists generally prescribe medication, but each psychiatrist is different in what their focus and concentration are. Certain hospital or clinic administrations put psychiatrists in the position of seeing patients for 15 minutes only for medication management. That’s not what Dr. Datta does here.
You don’t need to have a psychiatric or psychological problem to see Dr. Datta. Let’s do away with that negative stigma once and for all. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed medical school or residency and has the ability or license to prescribe medications. A psychologist can do a variety of talk therapies. Dr. Datta does both.
There’s no need to see a separate psychopharmacologist for medication, a separate psychotherapist for talk therapy, for couples therapy, or for meditation or EMDR exercises. Dr. Datta created this practice to provide you with a comprehensive, full picture of what’s going on with you psychologically, emotionally, and historically. Dr. Datta founded this practice to do this because he noticed that individuals are going to different doctors for only one of a couple pieces of the puzzle. Dr. Datta tries to see the entire puzzle for you, so you can come to one person.
Whether you need objective feedback about which direction you or your partner are going in your life, Whether you have lost your sense of self or your identity and need objective feedback about who you are (even the best of us lose this sense from time to time because life can be pretty challenging), Dr. Datta can help you with these issues. This is a customized one-on-one experience with Dr. Datta. You have a highly trained, objective listener and confidant in your corner who can give you customized feedback within a short amount of time.
